Customs intelligence officials have recovered 80 gold bars concealed inside the shoes worn by two Biman Bangladesh Airlines workers on the runway at Dhaka's Shahjalal International Airport.
The gold, weighing about 9.34kg, is estimated to be worth Tk 162.5 million, the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) said in a statement on Sunday.
The agency said its officials were deployed at the airport after receiving a tip-off and intercepted the two workers on the runway after Emirates flight EK-0582 arrived from Dubai.
Each of the bars weighed approximately 117 grams.
The agency says it is investigating who else was involved in the smuggling scheme, where the gold came from, and who was supposed to receive it.
