Customs officials have detained a Biman Bangladesh Airlines employee and a passenger after seizing around 1.05kg of gold worth Tk 21 million at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The Biman employee was identified as Obaidur Rahman, while the identity of the passenger was not disclosed, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) said in a statement on Friday.
Around 11:20pm on Thursday, members of the Airport Unit of Dhaka Customs House searched Obaidur with assistance from Aviation Security (AVSEC) and in the presence of officials from other intelligence agencies.
Nine gold bars wrapped in tissue paper were recovered from his shirt pockets and waist belt, according to the NBR.
The seized gold weighed around 1.05kg in total.
Customs officials subsequently detained the passenger based on information obtained during preliminary questioning of Obaidur.
Legal proceedings against those involved are under way under the Customs Act, 2023 and other relevant laws, the NBR said.
