Gas supply will remain suspended for 10 hours in several areas of Dhaka, including Mirpur, Agargaon and Shyamoli, on Thursday for emergency repairs to gas pipelines.

The Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company announced in a notice on Wednesday that residential, commercial and CNG customers in the affected areas will have no gas from 10am to 8pm on Thursday.

The affected areas are Agargaon, the western parts of Taltola, Shewrapara, Kazipara and Mirpur-10, as well as Mirpur-1, Paikpara, Shyamoli, Mirpur 60 Feet and Pirerbagh.

Gas supply will also be suspended on the right-hand side of the road from Kallyanpur towards Mirpur-1.

Titas said gas pressure may also remain low in areas surrounding the affected locations during the shutdown.

The state-owned company apologised for the temporary inconvenience caused to customers by the suspension.

Gas supply has previously been disrupted in Mirpur, Shyamoli and Kallyanpur because of pipeline repairs and work on damaged lines.

On Apr 9, a gas leak was detected in an underground pipeline in the Darus Salam area of Mirpur Road.

Gas shortages were reported in parts of the capital, including Mohammadpur, Shyamoli, Kallyanpur, Mirpur and Tejgaon, during the repair work.

According to Titas data, gas shortages in some parts of Dhaka have also been exacerbated by water entering through holes in old and damaged pipelines.

Company officials have said lower pressure in pipelines creates opportunities for water to enter through such holes.

In July, daily gas demand in areas under Titas was around 2 billion cubic feet, while supply fell below 1.5 billion cubic feet, resulting in a daily shortfall of around 500 million cubic feet.

At the time, customers in parts of Dhaka, including Mirpur, Mohammadpur and Dhanmondi, complained that they had no gas for much of the day or that pressure was too low to light their stoves.
