The Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) has arrested a 65-year-old woman after allegedly finding 100 grams of heroin worth an estimated Tk 1 million on her during a search of a bus in Dhaka's Jatrabari.
She was arrested after the Dhaka-bound Narail Express was stopped and searched at Dholairpar Gol Chattar on Tuesday night.
The passenger, identified as Masuma Khatun, was travelling from Jashore to Dhaka with the drugs, according to the agency.
Masuma told investigators during preliminary questioning that she had brought the heroin to Dhaka at the insistence and on the instructions of her daughter Tahmina, according to a DNC statement.
The agency said it was trying to identify others allegedly involved in the drug supply based on information obtained during Masuma's questioning.
The DNC said it had received a tip that a woman was travelling from Jashore to Dhaka on a Narail Express bus carrying heroin.
Acting on the information, a DNC team led by Assistant Director Mostak Ahmed took position at Dholairpar Gol Chattar.
The bus was stopped and searched around 7:30pm. DNC officials then questioned Masuma, who was seated in the middle of the bus.
The agency said Masuma admitted to carrying heroin, after which officials recovered a polythene packet wrapped in adhesive tape from inside her clothing. The packet contained 100 grams of heroin.
According to the DNC, Masuma also told investigators that she had transported heroin in the same way on two previous occasions.
The agency said it had obtained information indicating that her daughter Tahmina was involved in drug trafficking in the Jatrabari area.
It said intelligence gathering and operations were under way to verify the information, locate Tahmina and arrest her if her involvement was established.
DNC officials said they were also giving particular attention to the possible use of elderly women and family members to transport drugs.
