Elon Musk has reignited debate online by calling Instagram “for girls” in reply to an X user who said he had deleted the app.
The user, Geiger Capital, wrote: “Officially deleted Instagram. An inherently female app. Zero benefit.”
In May, the billionaire made the same statement while replying to a viral thread about social media habits and online trends, according to the Indian broadcaster NDTV.
The thread discussed how people’s online habits can mirror different phases of their lives. It listed common Instagram trends such as posting “thirst traps”, uploading stories through the day and sharing pictures of homemade food.
Musk wrote “Instagram is for girls” and mocked men who share their Instagram profiles with him. He later added that when grown men send him their profiles, he wonders if they are “transitioning or what”.
The post quickly went viral, with many users branding his comments sexist and offensive, the Indian outlet says.
His latest remark is again spreading across social media. “x is for who?” one user asked, while another questioned: “What about X?”
A third user disagreed. “I don’t agree. I think Instagram is a welcoming space for all genders,” the user wrote. A fourth said: “Instagram is for everyone.”
