Political leaders and organisations have mourned the death of bdnews24.com Editor-in-Chief Toufique Imrose Khalidi, lauding his contributions to journalism and pioneering role in the development of digital news media in Bangladesh.

"Toufique Imrose Khalidi made an important contribution to the development of journalism and digital news media in the country. His death will leave a void in the country's media landscape."

Islami Ganatantrik Party Chairman Abdul Awal and Secretary General Nurul Islam described Khalidi as one of the figures who helped make journalism in Bangladesh more credible.

"Toufique Imrose Khalidi was one of the architects behind bringing journalism in Bangladesh to a level of credibility. He valued news for the news itself," they said in a condolence message.

"He did not create any narrative. We hope his work in raising Bangladeshi journalism to international standards will add a new chapter to the history of modern journalism."

Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Abdul Moyeen Khan also mourned Khalidi's death, as did Bangladesh NAP Chairman Jebel Rahman Ghaani and Secretary General Golam Mostafa Bhuiyan.

Islami Andolan Bangladesh Secretary General Gazi Ataur Rahman paid tribute to Khalidi for refusing to "bow" to institutional pressure.

Bangladesh Student Federation Central President Saikat Arif and General Secretary Farhana Muna expressed their condolences to Khalidi's family, colleagues, relatives and well-wishers.

"Throughout his long career in journalism, he made important contributions to news reporting, investigative journalism and the establishment of a modern online news outlet. His death is an irreparable loss to the country's media and journalism."

Khalidi suffered a brain haemorrhage while on a private visit to the United Kingdom and was taken to St Bartholomew's Hospital in London on Thursday night.

Doctors pronounced him dead at 2:23pm local time on Friday.
