Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has accused some political parties of trying to create chaos in the country by capitalising on “untoward incidents”.

He said his government was working to restore the rule of law after what he described as its erosion over the previous 16 years.

“We have seen how the rule of law was trampled on over the past 16 years. We want to change that situation and gradually establish the rule of law,” Tarique said on Thursday.

“But we have noticed that some political parties are trying to capitalise on certain unwanted incidents to create chaos in the country.”

The prime minister was speaking at a rally marking the inauguration of the Muhuri-Kahua Flood Control, Drainage and Irrigation Rehabilitation Project near the Keyaghat-Muhuri Bridge in Feni’s Parshuram Upazila.

Tarique said political instability could disrupt government initiatives and ultimately hurt the public.

“I spoke about the Family Card, the Farmer Card, dredging canals, Upazila health complexes and reopening closed mills and factories,” he said.

“If this work is disrupted, who will suffer? The people of this country or people abroad? It will be the people of this country. But these political parties are trying to create chaos in the country.”

Addressing senior citizens in the audience, Tarique also invoked the role of the parties he was criticising during Bangladesh’s 1971 Liberation War, without naming them.

“There are elders here. We have seen the role played by these political parties that are creating chaos; these elders remember what their role was in 1971,” he said.

“We saw the wrongs they committed at the time, how they harassed our mothers and sisters and how they tortured them.”
