After more than two decades of celebrity gossip, candid revelations and headline-making conversations, Karan Johar is set to bring his popular chat show ‘Koffee With Karan’ to an end.

The ninth season of the show will be its final one, the filmmaker and host has announced, Indian broadcaster NDTV reports.

The makers have released a special video featuring an emotional Karan reflecting on the show's journey and saying goodbye to the programme that first aired in 2004.

“There are some journeys you don't plan to end. You simply know, somewhere deep within you, when it is time to let them go,” Johar said.

“‘Koffee With Karan’ has been an extraordinary part of my life. It has given me friendships, memories, moments of complete madness, a lot of love and, yes, its fair share of controversy.”

Johar credited the show's audience for keeping it alive over the years.

“They have laughed with us, debated us, trolled us, celebrated us and, most importantly, kept coming back for another cup,” he said.

“Saying goodbye is emotional, but it also feels right. This final season is my way of raising the mug one last time with gratitude, with love and with everyone who has made ‘Koffee With Karan’ what it is.”

What Brings the Show to an End?

Karan Johar says he is ending “Koffee With Karan” to focus on filmmaking and storytelling in the next phase of his career.

The filmmaker and host told Variety that the talk show has become a major part of his identity since it first aired in 2004.

“‘Koffee With Karan’ has been such a large part of my identity in the entertainment industry. I still can’t believe it’s been 22 years and now this will be my ninth season,” Karan said.

He said he wants to devote the next decade to making films.

“I want to spend the next decade of my life directing more movies, telling many more stories, so with a heavy heart I am making this season my last,” he said.

Karan described the decision as both “emotional and personal”, while reflecting on what the show has come to represent in his career.

“This will be the last time I will be on a couch that has been synonymous with conversations, candour and, well, controversies,” he said.

“The decision is emotional and personal to me. But I am hoping the legacy of love the show has given me continues to brew in people’s hearts,” he added.

‘Who Will Pay You for That?’

In the video, Karan recalled telling his father in June 2004 that he wanted to host a talk show.

He wanted to bring two celebrities together for an informal and candid conversation.

His father, however, questioned the idea.

“He told me, ‘Karan, you are going to call your friends, talk to them, something that you do every day anyway. Who will pay you for that?’” he recalled.

His father died on Jun 26 that year, Johar said.

The first episode of the show was shot on Aug 16, 2004.

“I'm here now, eight seasons later, 22 years later, 161 episodes later. A lot happened,” Johar said.

Over the years, he hosted celebrities who were lovers, friends and family members, as well as couples who later became ex-partners and, in some cases, eventually got married.

“I put an end to the careers of national icons. I am living with the term ‘nepo’ even today. Conjecture became a national word. So much happened,” he said.

Johar also recalled how people often ask him about the next season of ‘Koffee With Karan’.

“Everywhere I go, fortunately or unfortunately, they always ask me, ‘When is the next season of Koffee With Karan?’ I wonder why they never ask me, ‘When is my next feature film?’” he said.

He said he had reached a point where he realised that “all good things must come to an end”.

“This will be my very last season of ‘Koffee With Karan’,” Karan said.

Who Will Be on the Couch?

Speculation over the guest list for the ninth season has been building in recent weeks.

Names linked to the show include Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, as well as Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna.

The makers are expected to reveal the official guest line-up when the new season premieres on Oct 14.
