Rajshahi Medical University Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Jawadul Haque has allegedly been forced to sign a resignation letter after a group of people stormed his office.
Another university official was also allegedly forced to resign during the incident.
The group entered the campus around 11am on Tuesday under an “Apamor Chhatra-Janata” banner, according to Nazmul Hossain, the VC’s personal secretary and a section officer.
Witnesses and those involved said the group identified themselves as Jatiotabadi Jubo Dal activists.
Police went to the campus after being alerted but found no one there, said Gaziur Rahman, deputy commissioner and spokesperson for Rajshahi Metropolitan Police.
The VC said the group accused him and Nazmul of being “Awami League collaborators” and awarding university work to Dhaka-based contractors.
He said he had informed the local administration.
Witnesses said the group entered the VC’s office in a procession, verbally and physically harassed the two officials, and forced them to sign resignation letters prepared beforehand.
They were then removed from their rooms and the university’s main gate was locked.
Nazmul alleged that the group also removed a computer CPU and CCTV recording equipment from the VC’s room and cut electricity and internet connections across the campus.
“After the VC was forced to sign the resignation letter, I was also forced to sign one. When I refused, I was beaten,” Nazmul said.
Rajshahi city Jubo Dal President Shariful Islam Jony denied any involvement by the party, saying none of those seen in videos from the scene was affiliated with Jubo Dal.
Police said the university had not yet filed a complaint. Legal action will follow if it does.
