Gas and power shortages may have squeezed factories, but Bangladesh’s export earnings still pushed higher in September, rising 8.54 percent year-on-year to $3.94 billion.

The unexpected growth has left some exporters wondering how shipments increased despite production disruptions in recent months.

Data released by the Export Promotion Bureau on Thursday showed that garment exports did most of the heavy lifting.

The sector earned $3.08 billion in September, up 8.56 percent from the same month last year.

The figures surprised Fazlee Shamim Ehsan, executive president of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA).

“We were surprised that export earnings increased in September after August. There was no gas, no electricity. There was no production. We could not export. Yet EPB data says exports increased,” he told bdnews24.com.

“I don’t know who is exporting; how they did it; how it increased. EPB says it increased, mashallah…

“That’s all… I have no other comment.”
