This year’s Durga Puja will be an “acid test” for law-enforcing agencies, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed has said.

The festival will be the first major Hindu religious celebration since the BNP-led government took office, putting added focus on security arrangements across the capital.

The DMP will keep a heightened watch over every Puja venue in Dhaka to ensure the celebrations pass off peacefully, he said at a security and traffic management meeting at DMP Headquarters on Tuesday.

According to a DMP media statement, the commissioner ordered comprehensive security measures, including CCTV cameras at Puja venues and body-worn cameras for security personnel.

Police in uniform and plain clothes, along with SWAT, crisis response, quick response, crime scene and bomb disposal units, will remain ready throughout the festival.

Mahalaya will be observed on Oct 10, followed by Maha Shashthi on Oct 16, Maha Saptami on Oct 18, Maha Ashtami on Oct 19, Maha Navami on Oct 20 and Bijoya Dashami on Oct 21.

“Puja committees must strive to ensure their own venue’s security. They must monitor committee members, volunteers and visitors,” Mosleh Uddin said.

He urged people to call 999 or the nearest police station in emergencies.
