President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called for raising the standards at the University of Dhaka to the level of the world's leading universities.
The president made the call when a delegation led by Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof ABM Obaidul Islam came to meet him at the Bangabhaban on Sunday.
According to the President's Press Wing, Fakhrul said: "Dhaka University is not only the country's top university, but also the centre of the country's politics, history, tradition and culture."
"Everyone must work to raise the standard of education at Dhaka University and take it to the level of the world's leading universities."
The president said that democracy is a culture that is developed step by step through regular practice. For this, free, fair and impartial elections are necessary.
"At the same time, it is necessary to give adequate space to opponents and opposition parties to keep democracy effective. And that is the beauty of democracy. Democracy should be allowed to run effectively at its own pace."
During the meeting, the vice-chancellor informed the president about the overall academic activities of the university.
The vice-chancellor formally invited the president to attend the upcoming 54th convocation ceremony of Dhaka University as the chancellor. The president accepted the invitation and assured to attend the ceremony.
