A blaze at a garment factory in Gazipur has been brought under control after three and a half hours of firefighting, with crews still working to extinguish the remaining flames.

The fire broke out at Matrix Styles Limited factory near Fakir Market of Gazi Degir Chala around 2:45pm on Saturday, Gazipur Fire Service Deputy Assistant Director Saidul Alam Chowdhury said.

Nine units from the Fire Service and Civil Defence brought the fire under control around 6pm.

Three units from Gazipur Chowrasta Modern Fire Station arrived first. As the blaze intensified, one unit from Konabari, three from Gazipur and two from Rajendrapur joined them.

Firefighters are still working to snuff out the remaining flames.

Flames erupted on the third floor of the seven-storey building, and 70 people have been rescued.

With no pond or other water source nearby, and no fire-fighting system of its own at the factory, the crews struggled to get the upper hand.

“Our firefighters are still working inside,” said Fire Service Deputy Director Salauddin Ahmed. “It will take some time to put out the fire. Since this is a fabric warehouse, the stock has to be moved out piece by piece before the fire can be fully doused.”

Officials are checking whether anyone has been injured or killed.

The Fire Service says the cause of the fire, and whether the factory had any safety lapses, will be disclosed after a detailed inquiry.
