12 policemen injured in ‘shootout’ with criminals in Raozan

A criminal was shot and later arrested; weapons and ammunition have been seized from the scene

Twelve policemen have been injured in a “shootout” with police in Chattogram’s Raozan, said Chattogram Superintendent of Police Masud Alam.

Meanwhile, police have arrested a suspect who was shot in the altercation and recovered a substantial quantity of ammunition and weapons.

According to police, the gunfight took place during a raid in the Dakshin Kadalpur Joynagar Barua Para area of Ward No. 9 in Kadalpur Union on Wednesday night.

The detainee has been identified as 37-year-old Dildar Hossain.

Several of the policemen allegedly injured have been identified as Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Jannatun Naeem Rajan, SI Md Khorshed Alam, SI Md Bayezid Mridha, SI Md Jahangir Alam, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Md Jewel Chandra Biswas, ASI Md Rabiul Hossain.

On Thursday, Chattogram SP Masud Alam told reporters that there had been several complaints regarding a gang in the Raozan area extorting people.

Police believed that local resident Jaane Alam alias Dakat Alam, Mohammad Aziz and their followers were responsible for these incidents.

On Sept 25, it is alleged that the criminals went to the house of a man named Abu Bakkar Chowdhury to demand extortion money.

In response, police conducted a raid on Wednesday night.

Masud said that during the raid on Alam's house in South Kadalpur Joynagar Barua Para, the criminals sensed the police presence and opened fire indiscriminately. Police returned fire and brought the situation under control.

After the gunfight, police managed to arrest Dildar, who had been shot. However, Jaane Alam, Aziz and their associates Rubel, Mamun and Bacha managed to flee.

Later, based on information provided by Dildar, police recovered a double-barrelled and a single-barrelled gun, 119 rounds of Chinese rifle bullets, six cartridges and some sharp weapons from the house.
