Police have recovered the hanging body of an unidentified woman from a toilet at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The bloodied body was inside Toilet No. 4 between wards 110 and 111 on the ground floor of the hospital's old building around 10am on Monday.

A blood-stained knife had been found earlier in the morning near the second entrance to a conference room at the hospital's administrative block, about a five-minute walk from where the body was discovered.

Police have yet to establish whether the knife is connected to the woman's death.

Cleaner Mahmud Sheikh said he went to clean the toilets in the old building in the morning and, as usual, knocked on the doors and asked anyone inside to leave.

He received no response from Stall No. 4.

Mahmud said he eventually opened the door with the help of two co-workers, Rasel and Kamal, and found the woman's bloodied body hanging inside.

The incident was reported to Ansar personnel and a supervisor before the hospital authorities informed Shahbagh Police Station.

Meanwhile, cleaner Kashi Pelli Santosh said the blood-stained knife had been spotted between 6am and 6:30am near the administrative block.

Santosh said the floor was cleaned on the instructions of a senior official and the knife was washed and kept aside.

Four to five hours later, Santosh learnt that a person had been found dead in the toilet near wards 110 and 111.

Hospital Assistant Director Shaila Ferdous Ahsan said she learnt about the woman's death after arriving at the hospital in the morning.

She said blood stains and drops of blood had earlier been seen near the second entrance to the conference room.

The area was subsequently cleaned by a cleaner at the request of an Ansar member on duty, she said.

"At first, it seemed the blood might have come from a patient. This happens in hospitals," Shaila said.

"Later, after learning about the incident in the bathroom, it seemed suspicious. There are CCTV cameras in the area. Additional details will be available once we check the footage."

Officers from Shahbagh Police Station, the Criminal Investigation Department's Crime Scene Unit and detectives were at the hospital collecting evidence.

Shahbagh Police Station chief Moniruzzaman said investigators were working to determine what had happened.

"We came to the hospital after the incident was reported. The CID's Crime Scene Unit is working at the scene," he said.

"Efforts are under way to recover the body, collect evidence and review CCTV footage to determine the actual cause of death."
