A local Jubo Dal leader has died allegedly during a clash with the police in Dhaka.
Shamim Mollah was the president of a unit in Mugda Thana Jubo Dal's Ward No. 7, according to Shafiqul Islam Milton, the acting general secretary of the opposition BNP's youth front.
Milton claimed that Shamim was killed in a police encounter in Naya Paltan on Saturday.
Shamim was taken to Central Police Hospital in Rajarbagh with serious injuries, where doctors declared him dead.
A person named Shamim was brought to the hospital's emergency department by a group of people amid a chaotic situation at the hospital when it was attacked by BNP activists, according to DIG Sheikh Mohammad Rezaul Haider, the hospital's director.
The person died well before arriving at the hospital, he said.
“We learnt that he worked as a driver. We've contacted his family, and there are no visible injuries on his body.”
He could not confirm the cause of Shamim’s death without performing an autopsy, said Rezaul.
