Bangladesh dengue deaths rise to 249 as 1,978 more hospitalised in a day

Bangladesh has reported four new dengue deaths and 1,978 hospital admissions from the Aedes mosquito-borne disease in the last 24-hour count.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the latest fatalities have taken this year’s dengue toll to 249.

The health directorate bulletin said on Thursday that 180 patients were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka North City Corporation and 176 in Dhaka South during the period.

Outside the two city corporations, 328 patients were admitted in other hospitals across Dhaka Division.

In addition, Chattogram recorded 358 new admissions, while Barishal reported 260, Khulna 256, Rajshahi 209, Mymensingh 94, Rangpur 101 and Sylhet 16.

A total of 1,809 dengue patients were discharged from hospitals in the past 24-hour window.

So far this year, 81,598 people have been hospitalised with dengue, while 75,699 have recovered and been discharged.

September has seen the highest monthly toll this year, with 43,774 hospitalisations and 148 deaths recorded, official figures show.

The health directorate has kept records of dengue hospitalisations and deaths since 2000. The highest number of hospitalisations was recorded in 2023, when 321,179 people were admitted and 1,705 died from the disease.

More than 400 people died from dengue last year, while around 102,000 cases were recorded.
