Hospitals in Bangladesh have admitted 1,852 new dengue patients in a day, taking the tally of infections this year to 258,912.
The death toll from the mosquito-borne disease increased by 12 to 1,284 in the 24 hours to Tuesday morning, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.
Dhaka registered 427 new cases and five deaths from the disease in this period. The number of cases outside the capital was 1,425, with seven fatalities.
The hospitals across Bangladesh were treating 7,546 patients for dengue fever in the morning, and 2,106 of them were in the capital.
After a record 79,598 dengue cases and 396 deaths from the disease in September, as many as 55,506 cases and 295 deaths have been recorded so far in October.
Experts have blamed a prolonged monsoon and rising temperature, along with a lack of effective measures to kill the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the known carrier of the virus, for the outbreak.
