Russell Crowe and Jacob Tremblay’s crime thriller Unabomber has shot to No. 1 on Netflix’s worldwide movie chart just a day after its release.
The film was released on Netflix on Sept 25 and follows Ted Kaczynski from his years as a young Harvard student through the events that made him one of America’s most notorious criminals, Men’s Journal reports.
The movie is now No. 1 on Netflix worldwide, according to FlixPatrol, ahead of “Best of the Best”, A Minecraft Movie, “The Whisper Man” and “Black Adam”.
It has also reached No. 1 in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy and several other countries.
ScreenRant dubbed it the "most-watched movie in the world," the magazine noted -- a rapid-fire debut by any measure.
Directed by Janus Metz, the film casts Tremblay as a young Kaczynski and Crowe as Harvard prof Henry Murray, digging into the controversial psychological experiments Kaczynski endured on campus before the manhunt that finally brought him down.
Shailene Woodley, Annabelle Wallis, Alexander Ludwig, Steven Ogg and Marc Menchaca fill out the ensemble, per Men's Journal.
The film’s early success comes during a strong run for crime-related titles on Netflix.
“Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story” is currently No. 1 on the streamer’s worldwide TV chart, meaning both of Netflix’s global charts are led by stories centred on notorious American crimes.
Poor Reviews
“Unabomber” has bombed with critics and audiences alike on Rotten Tomatoes.
None of that has dented its pull, with Men's Journal suggesting morbid curiosity and star power have been more than enough to hook viewers early on.
Reviews and ratings rarely tell the same story on Netflix, but “Unabomber” is a standout case -- taking just a day to become the platform's top film globally and dominate individual charts across dozens of countries.
Whether it can hold the crown is another question.
