LPG sellers face action for charging above Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission-set prices, the LPG Operators Association of Bangladesh (LOAB) has warned.

The warning comes amid complaints that 12kg cylinders are being sold for as much as Tk 2,300 against the official price of Tk 1,585.

In a statement on Thursday, LOAB said operators, distributors, dealers and retailers selling above the prescribed price or illegally stockpiling LPG would face action under existing law.

The association said imports and supply remained “satisfactory”, with 156,000 metric tonnes imported in September, close to August’s 158,000 tonnes.

LOAB considers the supply “sufficient” to meet domestic demand and said there was no scope for creating an artificial shortage.

Yet consumers in parts of Dhaka have reported struggling to find 12kg cylinders at the official price.

Some said they had to buy cylinders from other companies after failing to find their usual brand, with sellers charging up to Tk 3,500 including the cylinder price.

At a Sept 28 meeting at the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, LPG operators said the country’s overall supply and stock situation was “normal”.

On Sept 30, Power Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku ordered deputy commissioners to closely monitor the LPG market and investigate whether artificial shortages were being created to push up prices.

They were asked to submit reports with evidence.

LOAB urged its member companies, distributors, dealers and retailers to immediately ensure LPG is sold at BERC-set prices.

The association also said it would continue cooperating with the administration and law-enforcement agencies to protect consumer rights and maintain market stability.
