The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has raised the retail price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for October, with the price of the most widely used 12kg cylinder increasing by Tk 252 to Tk 1,837.

The new prices will take effect from 6pm on Sunday and remain in force until further notice, according to a BERC media statement.

The retail price of private LPG, including VAT, has been set at Tk 153.06 per kg for October, up Tk 20.94 from Tk 132.12 in September.

Under the latest adjustment, the price of a 5.5kg cylinder has been set at Tk 842, while 12.5kg, 15kg and 16kg cylinders will cost Tk 1,913, Tk 2,296 and Tk 2,449 respectively.

The price of an 18kg cylinder has been set at Tk 2,755, 20kg at Tk 3,061, 22kg at Tk 3,367, 25kg at Tk 3,827 and 30kg at Tk 4,592.

The price of a 33kg cylinder has been fixed at Tk 5,051, 35kg at Tk 5,357 and 45kg at Tk 6,888.

The price of autogas used in vehicles has also increased significantly. The BERC has raised the price by Tk 11.53 per litre to Tk 84.62 from Tk 73.09.

For privately supplied LPG delivered in liquid form through reticulated systems, the price including VAT has been set at Tk 149.31 per kg, up from Tk 128.37 in September.

For LPG supplied in gaseous form through the same system, the price has been set at Tk 0.3319 per litre, or Tk 331.90 per cubic metre.

Higher Saudi CP

The BERC said the latest adjustment was made based on Saudi Aramco's Saudi Contract Price (Saudi CP) for propane and butane for October.

The October Saudi CP for propane has been set at $680 per tonne and butane at $730. Taking a propane-butane ratio of 35:65, The BERC calculated the average Saudi CP at $712.50 per tonne.

In September, the Saudi CP for propane was $625 per tonne and butane $660. The average Saudi CP that month was $647.75 per tonne.

The average Saudi CP therefore increased by $64.75 per tonne in one month.

For the October price adjustment, BERC considered $250 per tonne for freight and the importers' premium, compared with $160 in September.

This means the amount considered for freight and the importers' premium in calculating LPG prices increased by $90 per tonne in a month.

BERC used an average exchange rate of Tk 123.18 per US dollar for the October price calculation, compared with Tk 123.30 in September.

The price of government-supplied LPG has remained unchanged. The consumer-level price of a 12.5kg government LPG cylinder will remain at Tk 776.93.

Recent Price Changes

In September, the BERC cut the price of a 12kg LPG cylinder by Tk 13 to Tk 1,585.

The price had increased by Tk 70 to Tk 1,598 in August. Before that, it was cut by Tk 357 to Tk 1,528 in July.

In June, the price was reduced by Tk 55 to Tk 1,885. Earlier, on Apr 19, it was raised by Tk 212 to Tk 1,940.

On Apr 2, the price had been increased by Tk 387 to Tk 1,728.

As a result, the price of a 12kg cylinder increased by a total of Tk 599 in two adjustments in April. It then fell by a total of Tk 412 in June and July.

The price increased by Tk 70 in August, fell by Tk 13 in September and has now risen by Tk 252 in October.

The BERC said bottled LPG, reticulated LPG and autogas cannot be sold at any stage -- including storage and bottling, distribution or retail -- at prices higher than those set by the commission.
