A traffic police sergeant has chased and detained a man who allegedly tried to flee with a passenger’s mobile phone as the passenger was getting off a bus in the Banani graveyard area.
The phone was later recovered from the suspect and returned to the victim.
The incident took place around 11am on Monday in the area adjacent to Banani Graveyard.
The detained man was later handed over to Banani Police Station.
Traffic Sergeant Nazmul Islam, who recovered the phone and detained the man, told bdnews24.com that he was on duty in the area when he heard a commotion coming from a BRTC bus.
“I went towards the bus and saw a man trying to flee with the mobile phone of a passenger who was getting off the bus. I chased him and detained him,” he said.
He said several people then surrounded the suspect and attempted to beat him.
“I took control of the situation and, for his safety, took him to the police box,” Nazmul said.
Later, the victim, Sajedur Rahman Panna, 33, identified the mobile phone. The recovered phone was handed back to him.
Sajedur expressed his gratitude for the police’s prompt action.
Banani police said the detained man was identified as Hridoy Mahmud, 43. He claimed to be a resident of Madhumita area in Tongi.
Banani Police Station chief Md Salauddin told bdnews24.com that the traffic police had detained the man and handed him over to the station.
“As there is no complainant, legal action will be taken against him through a mobile court,” he said.
