Four cases have been filed at two police stations in connection with a clash between hawkers, police and city corporation workers during an eviction drive in Dhaka's Mirpur.

Twenty-five people have been arrested in these cases so far, said Mirpur Division Deputy Commissioner Hasan Mohammad Naser Rikabder.

Of these, three cases have been filed at Mirpur Model Police Station, two of which were filed by the police and one by the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).

A total of 17 people have been named in these cases, with 400 to 500 unidentified suspects listed in each of them.

The charges in these cases include assault on police, obstruction of government work, vandalism of police vehicles and traffic police boxes, arson of city corporation vehicles and damage to government property.

The DNCC is the plaintiff in the case filed at Kafrul Police Station over the torching of a vehicle, and 400 to 500 unnamed suspects have been in that case as well.

Deputy Commissioner Hasan said, "We have arrested about 25 people so far and our operation is continuing. Many were arrested yesterday, and some were arrested this morning as well."

He said that after the suspects are detained, their identities are verified, and they are officially arrested.

Police say that those involved in the clash, vandalism and arson are being identified through video footage, photos and other information from the time of the incident.

The DNCC launched an operation to evict illegal encroachment of footpaths in Mirpur on Wednesday morning. The operation was conducted on the road leading from the Mirpur-10 roundabout to Hope Market. During the drive, an electric wire was torn while moving a shop in the Baitul Quddus Jame Masjid Market. It sparked a fire.

When the fire broke out, enraged hawkers clashed with the police and city corporation workers. The hawkers began throwing brickbats and stones, while police fired tear gas.

During the clash, three garbage trucks were set on fire. Police vehicles, vans and some buses were also vandalised. Journalists attempting to cover the incident were also allegedly attacked. Several people, including policemen, were injured in the incident.

Meanwhile, DNCC Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton said after the incident that the eviction drive will continue.
