The delayed uranium shipment meant for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant has arrived in Bangladesh.
The shipment, which is to be used to refuel the first unit of Bangladesh's only nuclear power plant, was meant to arrive on Sept 24. It was held up as Pakistan refused to grant permission to use its airspace for the flight.
Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA) Chairman Mahmudul Hasan said that a special cargo flight carrying uranium for the Rooppur project landed in Dhaka around 11:45pm on Friday.
Science and Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam told the media on Sept 28, "Pakistan has not given the clearance. There are several countries on the route -- Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan and then India. The clearance from Pakistan... as it was granted previously, it will be given. Maybe there was some gap and it was not approved. It will be cleared."
The uranium shipment arrived in the country on Friday on board a Russian-made four-engine Ilyushin Il-76 aircraft.
