A Dhaka court has granted bail to retired major general Golam Mohiuddin Chowdhury in a case over the attack, vandalism and looting at New Gini Properties in the capital's ECB Chattar.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrates’ Court granted bail on Monday, when he was produced after a three-day remand, said Sub-Inspector (SI) Tarequr Rahman of the prosecution department.
The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Mohiuddin from a house in Segunbagicha on Sept 30. The next day, the court allowed police to question him in custody for three days.
Investigating officer Jehad Hossain, a DB inspector, asked the court to keep him in jail after the questioning period.
Defence lawyer Mohammad Abul Kalam Khan, general secretary of the Dhaka Bar Association, pleaded for bail.
After the hearing, the court granted bail on a Tk 2,000 bond until the next date, Oct 28.
Attack on New Gini Properties
The attack, vandalism and looting at the New Gini Properties housing project in the Cantonment Police Station's South Manikdi took place on the night of Sept 26.
The vandalism also struck content creator Salman Muqtadir's "Brownfish" studio, located within the same project.
New Gini Properties Director Md Saiful Islam Bhuiyan filed a case over the incident at Cantonment Police Station, naming 13 people including Chowdhury, along with 150 to 200 unidentified accused.
Past the New Gini project's Gate 1, beyond Muqtadir's studio, the project's boundary ends a short distance further, bordering a 35-katha or 0.23-hectare plot earmarked for a separate housing project that has yet to break ground.
Several New Gini officials and police personnel involved in the investigation said the dispute began over access to the proposed housing project and gradually grew from there.
They said Chowdhury, the fourth accused in the case, and several others wanted to develop a housing project on the plot.
But there is no road around the site suitable for access, leaving the road through Gate 1 of the New Gini project as the only route.
The day after the incident, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed also referred to the dispute during a media briefing at the Secretariat.
He said a title dispute had been running between a builder group called New Gini Properties and a retired senior military officer over a contested plot of about 35 katha in Manikdi.
“When one side tried to seize the disputed land under cover of night, a tin-shed studio of content creator [Salman] was vandalised,” the minister added.
