A Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight on the Dhaka-London-Dhaka route has turned back mid-flight due to the power outage at London’s Heathrow Airport.
Group Captain Muhammed Kamrul Islam, executive director of Shahjalal International Airport, confirmed the news on Friday afternoon.
Flight BG-201 set off from Dhaka for London at 8:42am. It landed at Sylhet’s Osmani International Airport at 9:06am. It then set off for London again at 10:46am.
At 1:45pm, it landed again at Shahjalal International Airport as the situation at Heathrow had yet to normalise.
Kamrul said that hotel arrangements had been made for the flight’s passengers after their landing. A total of 267 people, including the passengers, pilots, and crew, were on board the aircraft.
Citing Biman’s London station manager, the group captain said that the airline is in constant contact with authorities at Heathrow Airport. The flight will set off as soon as the clearance comes in.
“The flight to London has turned back midway as flights are not taking off or landing there,” said Boshra Islam, Biman’s general manager of public relations. “We will resume our flight when the situation returns to normal.”
A major power outage has closed Heathrow – Europe’s busiest airport and the world’s fifth busiest – for all of Friday.
The measure had to be taken after a fire broke out at a power substation near the airport, the BBC reports. The substation provided the airport with power.
A Heathrow spokesperson said that fire service personnel are working to bring the fire under control.
“At this time, we cannot say how long it will take for the power supply to return to normal. However, our staff are working hard to manage the situation,” they said.
