Dhaka, Mar 16 (BDNEWS) – Mollah Sabira finished seventh among eleven weightlifters in the women's 48-kg category of the 18th Commonwealth Games at the Melbourne Exhibition center Thursday.
Indian Kunjarani Devi Nameirakpam clinched the gold medal lifting 166 kg -– 72 kg in snatch and 94 kg in clean and jerk.
Sabira, who failed twice to lift 73 kg in clean and jerk, lifted total of 131 kg -- 64 kg in snatch and 67 kg in clean and jerk.
Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) had predicted that Sabira would bag at least bronze medal in the women's 48-kg category.
However, Sabira surpassed his previous records of 124 kg-- 57 kg in snatch and 67 kg in clean and jerk – in the 74th Men's and 17th Women's Centennial Weightlifting World Championship in Doha, Qatar in 2005.
Lifter Ekramul Haq finished 11th, out of 16, in the men's 56kg category.
Rubel Rana, who took part in heat-3 to finish seventh keeping Gibraltar Jamie Zammitt behind him in eight swimmers, became 24th among 26 swimmers in the men's 50m backstroke clocking 29.47 seconds.
The national champion Rubel Rana in 50m backstroke, however, improved his timing this time to clock 29.47 seconds. His previous timing was 29.59 seconds in the same event of the 17th Commonwealth Games in Manchester 2002.
Shooters Asif Hossain Khan, Anjan Kumar Singh and Sharmin Akter will compete their respective 10m air rifle events Friday.
On the same day, swimmer Jewel Ahmed takes part in the heats of 50m butterfly and 50m free style while Sabura Khatun goes to the swimming pool for the heats of 50m breaststroke and 100m butterfly.
Besides, weightlifter Hamidul Islam takes part in the men's 62-kg category.
