Brazil's star-studded line-up still could not sell out Kolkata for their friendly against India, and now tickets for the Uruguay clash are being given away at a near-90 percent discount.
Tickets for Block C2 right and C2 left at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, also known as Salt Lake Stadium, have been reduced from Rs 1,999 (about Tk 2,550) to Rs 199 (about Tk 255), the Indian football official account announced on Sunday.
The move comes after India’s recent friendly against Brazil at the stadium drew just over 51,000 spectators, well below the venue’s 68,000 capacity, despite Brazil fielding Vinicius Junior, Gabriel Magalhães and Marquinhos, The Indian Express reports.
India had earlier played Panama in Bengaluru as part of their preparations for the matches against Brazil and Uruguay.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday also announced free tickets for the Oct 6 India-Uruguay match for people who missed Lionel Messi’s chaotic visit to Kolkata last year.
About 22,000 people who missed that event will be offered complimentary tickets through a WhatsApp number, Adhikari told local reporters in Kolkata, according to the newspaper.
West Bengal Sports Minister Indranil Khan made the same announcement on X, saying the passes would be offered as a goodwill gesture to football fans who bought tickets for Messi’s GOAT tour of Kolkata on Dec 13 last year.
The physical passes can be collected on Oct 5 from 11am to 5pm local time on production of a valid government photo ID and the previous paid ticket.
The India-Uruguay friendly is scheduled for Oct 6 at the VYBK stadium.
