Police say 36 cases have been filed at several police stations across Dhaka over the violence on Oct 28. About 1,544 named suspects have also been accused in the case documents.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been arrested in a case over an attack on the residence of the chief justice and sent to jail.
Law enforcers apprehended 696 people in connection with the violence, and 256 were arrested on Sunday, according to KN Roy Niyati, additional deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Many unnamed individuals were also included as suspects in these cases, he said.
BNP leaders Mirza Fakhrul and Mirza Abbas are among the 164 suspects named in connection with the killing of a policeman, said Md Salauddin, chief of Paltan Police Station.
Six cases have been filed over arson and property damage, according to Hafizur Rahman, chief of Shahjahanpur Police Station.
Some 50 people, including Mirza Abbas, was named as suspects in one of the cases. Another 700 – 800 people were also accused.
