BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, admitted to Dhaka’s Evercare Hospital, is still receiving treatment as before, her personal physician Dr AZM Zahid Hossain said.
Outside the hospital on Wednesday night, he reassured that “she can continue or maintain her treatment”.
“The doctors are providing it [treatment], she is able to accept it, and she is genuinely responding to it,” he said.
Dr Zahid appealed to the public not to spread rumours about her condition.
“Do not spread any false information that may create confusion. We want to say, Madam is under ICU care and receiving the highest level of treatment necessary for a critically ill patient. I earnestly request everyone, through you, not to pay attention to any rumours,” he added.
The BNP chief was admitted to Evercare Hospital on Nov 23. A medical board headed by Dr Shahabuddin Talukder, comprising specialists from home and abroad, is overseeing her treatment under close observation.
Experts based in the UK, the US and Australia are joining the board virtually, while specialists from China and Britain have flown in to examine her directly.
Zubaida Rahman, wife of BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, also came from London to be with the family.
Zahid said the widespread concern for Khaleda was understandable.
“People are anxious, they respect her, they love her, and they want to know her latest condition. That is why we are briefing you.
“But at the end of the day, she is a patient. She has certain ethical rights and privileges. As physicians, we cannot disclose everything publicly simply because we may wish to; medical science does not permit such disclosure,” he added.
Dr Zahid noted the treatment is continuing in line with advice from the full panel of experts. “We are very hopeful, and so is the entire medical board, that her care can be ensured to the highest standard.”
He said taking her abroad remains an option if required.
“She may be moved overseas at any time if necessary. But this is not yet the stage to announce such a decision. Only Allah knows what arrangements lie ahead.”
Her treatment, he stressed, is ongoing with “the mercy of the Almighty, people’s prayers, and the tireless efforts of all doctors, nurses and medical staff involved”.
Zahid requested continued prayers for the former prime minister’s recovery.
