Clashes outside Bakshibazar court

The attackers set fire to his car near the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday.

He suffered injuries to the head and was hospitalised for treatment.

The Netrakona-1 MP is the under the supervision of neurosurgeon Dr Raziul Hauqe, said DMCH outpost Police Inspector Mozammel Haque.

“Police chased some BNP activists into the hospital. Later they attacked the MP’s car,” he said.

The mobile court handed one of them a two-year prison sentence immediately. At least six were detained over the incident.

bdnews24.com Chief Crimes Correspondent Liton Haider, who witnessed the incident, said the clash erupted between BNP and Awami League supporters outside a special court in Bakhsibazar where Khaleda Zia appeared for the hearing of her graft case.

Some BNP supporters went to the hospital after being injured in the clash. That was when Chhabi Biswas was assaulted in front of the main gate at the emergency unit.

"I came here to check on a freedom-fighter who is being treated here and am now receiving treatment myself," said Biswas.

Mohammad Hasnine, the driver of the MP’s car, said, “There were eight people in the car including sir (Biswas). One of them was sick. Seeing trouble in the emergency unit, sir told me to turn the car around.

"But as soon as we got out through the gate, 30-40 young men attacked the car.”

The other riders moved away as the BNP supporters vandalised the car and assaulted the driver. Then they set the car ablaze.

The attackers fled when police, reporters and hospital workers arrived there. Later Biswas was taken to the hospital police outpost.

He was taken to the emergency unit for treatment half an hour after things returned to normal.

Chawkbazar police OC Azizul Haque said they detained six people over the incident.

Afzal Hossain, 22, was arrested on charges of setting fire to the car and sentenced to two years in prison by mobile court Magistrate Sarwar Alam.

His father Abul Hossain told bdnews24.com that Afzal was a third-year student of accounting at Dania University College.

Abul Hossain claimed Afzal was not involved in politics and had gone to the DMCH with a friend.
