Security measures have been tightened at Dhaka's Shahjalal International Airport ahead of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's departure for London.
The BNP has asked its leaders and activists to remain on the footpaths to bid farewell to Khaleda without disrupting traffic or public movement.
The call has prompted police to bolster security in the area.
The BNP chief is scheduled to leave for London for medical treatment at 10pm on Tuesday on a special air ambulance sent by the Qatar’s emir.
The aircraft arrived in Dhaka on Monday and is stationed on the airport tarmac.
“Begum Khaleda Zia will leave her Gulshan residence at 8pm on Tuesday for Shahjalal International Airport,” BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said in a media statement on Monday.
“She will reach the airport by 9pm and depart for the United Kingdom at 10pm.”
The statement also urged BNP leaders and activists from both Dhaka North and South units, along with all affiliated organisations, to bid farewell in a disciplined manner from the footpaths.
Deputy Commissioner Rawnak Jahan of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Uttara Division said, “The airport road is a critical entry and exit point for Dhaka.
“We have increased security to prevent public inconvenience and ensure no untoward incidents occur.”
Airport Police Station chief Taslima Akter said, “An additional 10 platoons of police have been deployed around the airport.
“Regular security personnel from Airport Armed Police and Civil Aviation Authority remain on duty, alongside Rapid Action Battalion [RAB].”
Civil Aviation Chairman Air Vice Marshal Monjur Kabir Bhuiyan told bdnews24.com, “We are fully prepared.
“The airport is a Key Point Installation [KPI], and all arrangements have been made.”
He concluded, "We have coordinated with everyone. There will be no issues."
