Jamaat-e-Islami has criticised the Public Prosecutor (PP) for "objectionable wording" over the case against Akhtaruzzaman Ranjan, accused of threatening the executive director of Dhaka's Shahjalal International Airport.
The party said in a statement on Saturday that such "indecent" remarks have called the PP's own position and responsibility into question.
Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair, secretary of its central publicity and media department, issued the reaction.
A video of Akhtaruzzaman berating airport Executive Director SM Ragib Samad over delays in supplying Zamzam water to Umrah pilgrims went viral on Thursday.
In it, the former MP is heard saying: “I'll grab you by the neck and throw you out. You don't work, you don't do anything, you get postings through lobbying. Do you want to get beaten?”
Shahriar Alam Sajib, a security officer of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), filed a case at Airport Police Station early on Friday.
On Saturday, a court ordered Akhtaruzzaman to be questioned for one day.
State counsel Omar Faruq Faruqi briefed reporters at the court that day. Asked why remand was sought, he said protest is no offence in the country, but its language and manner become a crime when they cross a line.
“His protest was criminal and motivated,” he said.
The PP also criticised Jamaat. “They have brought in some people for political purposes, and they are discarded goods,” he said. “They do nothing but abuse the government and the people and make unruly statements.”
Jamaat responded that night. “Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court PP [Faruqi] used indecent and objectionable words while briefing on Akhtaruzzaman's case, which is unbecoming of a responsible person,” its statement said.
“Akhtaruzzaman is a valiant freedom fighter, a former member of parliament and a respected citizen,” it added. “By making such indecent remarks about him before journalists, the PP has called his own position and responsibility into question.”
Akhtaruzzaman, known locally as Major Ranjan, joined Jamaat on Dec 13 last year by filling in a form for “primary associate member”.
He was elected an MP from Kishoreganj-2 as a BNP candidate. The party expelled him three times for adverse comments on its top leadership.
