Indian Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi has met with Dinesh Trivedi, India's high commissioner-designate to Bangladesh, with discussions centring on strengthening defence ties, border security, and military-to-military engagement, ANI reports.
The meeting, held on Thursday, comes amid ongoing diplomatic and strategic interaction between India and Bangladesh, focusing particularly on security coordination along the border and broader regional stability issues.
The Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADGPI) of the Indian Army shared details of the interaction on the social media platform X, confirming that the talks focused on advancing defence ties, the Indian news agency said.
Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, speaking on Thursday, described the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) as entirely India's “internal affair”.
"What they do with their citizens, how they determine citizenship -- what they say in line with their election promises or policies is completely their own business. There is no reason for us to have any comment on it.”
The home minister also said the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) remains on high alert along the frontier to prevent illegal infiltration.
On ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Salahuddin said: "We want her back -- through legal means. We have made a request through the foreign ministry, under the extradition treaty.
“We want [Hasina] back and we want her to face the cases against her."
According to him, the government remains fully committed to maintaining law and order and ensuring justice through lawful and institutional processes.
His remarks clearly show how relations between Bangladesh and India are currently undergoing a major structural reset, marking a transformative phase in regional diplomacy, ANI said.
Both countries are actively charting a forward-looking path, the agency said, with ties under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's government moving towards a “highly pragmatic, interest-driven partnership at a time when bilateral relations were navigating a complex phase shaped by security concerns, border management, and evolving political dynamics”.
