A Bangladeshi taxi driver has been shot and wounded in New York after trying to calm a dispute involving a passenger following a minor traffic collision.
The shooting took place early Friday local time on North Portland Avenue near Auburn Place in Brooklyn.
Police say 53-year-old Ruhul Amin Nasir has undergone two surgeries and is now in stable condition.
According to witnesses, Nasir was dropping off a passenger when another vehicle rear-ended his taxi.
He got out to check the damage as the passenger became involved in an argument with the other driver.
While Nasir was trying to defuse the confrontation, a man allegedly emerged from a nearby house and suddenly opened fire, striking him on the right side of his face.
Nasir was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, where he underwent two operations, his friend Shah Alam said on Saturday evening.
Nasir previously served as secretary of the Probashi Barishal Divisional Welfare Association.
Alam, an advisor to the organisation, said members of the community had been monitoring his condition but were angered that the gunman had not been arrested more than a day after the shooting.
The attack has added to growing concern over shootings involving taxi drivers in New York City.
Fernando Mateo, spokesperson for the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers, said drivers were risking their lives to earn a living while armed attackers continued to escape without being caught.
He renewed the federation's call for mandatory cameras in every New York taxi to help identify suspects more quickly after attacks on drivers.
According to the federation, the shooting of Nasir was the second attack on a taxi driver on duty in the past two weeks.
A few days earlier, Pakistani driver Danish Sarwar was shot in Brooklyn and left paralysed.
