BCB chief Tamim Iqbal says he will run for president again

He urges all to participate in the election, scheduled to be held within three months

Hours after his appointment as the chief of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), Tamim Iqbal has announced that he will contest in the next election of the board, planned to be held in three months.

He made it clear at a press conference at the BCB office on Tuesday evening after convening the first meeting of a new 11-member ad hoc committee.

He, however, did not confirm whether he would hold the post during the election.

He also asked everyone interested to participate in the election.

“Of course, we will contest in elections. Here, I need to be asked personally. I may be interested and I can run [for the position],” he said.

“When there is a free and fair election…not just us, I will request everyone interested to participate.”

Tamim added, “The election will be held for a new leadership of the board. All directors of the board, cricketers and organisers -- everybody should participate.

“We will create a congenial environment so we can conduct a good election and everyone can come and vote.”

The former Bangladesh skipper wanted to participate in the last BCB election, held during the interim government, as well.

He submitted his nomination papers, but eventually withdrew from the race citing allegations including government interference in the voting. Many potential candidates withdrew on similar grounds.

Aminul Islam Bulbul won the election to take the helm of the BCB.

However, after a political changeover in the country, the National Sports Council (NSC) formed a special committee to probe the allegations, causing the board led by Bulbul to be dissolved and the new ad hoc committee headed by Tamim to be formed.

In addition to managing the regular activities of the board, the major responsibility of this ad hoc committee is to hold the BCB elections within three months.
