The Jatiyabadi Chhatra Dal, or JCD, is walking the path of the banned organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League, or BCL, in relation to the recent events, Islami Chhatra Shibir Central President Zahidul Islam has claimed.
“Although the banned Chhatra League has been expelled from Bangladesh, it is unfortunate to see a friendly student organisation like the Chhatra Dal adopting their ways,” he said at a press conference outside Dhaka University Madhu’s Canteen at 4:30pm on Sunday.
Zahidul added, “Public aspirations regarding student politics are being destroyed due to the dominance, extortion, occupation, tagging, and blame-shifting practices of certain student organisations.
He referred to the recent clash at the Khulna University of Engineering and Technology, or KUET.
“They are attacking students in a criminal-like manner and then deliberately blaming the Chhatra Shibir—just like the banned Chhatra League used to do.”
Zahidul also accused the JCD of trying to suppress the Chhatra Shibir and other student organisations “unfairly”.
"They are making horrific statements on Facebook, declaring that."
“The Chhatra Dal is making horrifying declarations on social media, saying 'hacking or attacking Shibir was justified before and will continue to be so in the future'."
He continued, “Using the KUET incident as a pretext, they staged protests in different places, falsely accusing the Chhatra Shibir.
“During a rally at Shibbari in Khulna, they chanted ‘Catch and slaughter Shibir members’.
“We used to hear such terrifying slogans from the Chhatra League. Now we see the banned Chhatra League’s reflection in Chhatra Dal.”
The Shibir president further claimed that even in a “Sheikh Hasina-free Bangladesh”, some student organisations have openly adopted “fascist tools”.
“Despite changes in leadership, the crimes persist, including extortion and occupation, which makes it hard to see any real change," he added.
“On the 22nd of February, in Jashore’s Chanchra, Chhatra Dal criminals gouged out the eyes of a fish trader named Samrat for refusing to pay extortion money.
“[On Saturday] in Gazipur, extortion money was collected in broad daylight with a microphone announcement. Incidents like these are being reported in the media every day.”
At the briefing, Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing explained recent events.
Zahidul said, "The recent attacks at KUET, Sylhet MC College, and Tamirul Millat Kamil Madrasah are part of a pattern of a student organisation turning into a new form of fascism."
"In the KUET incident, more than fifty students were seriously injured in a planned armed attack by external criminals from the Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal, targeting general students in broad daylight.
“The Chhatra Dal failed to take action against their unruly members and instead shifted the blame for the criminal activities onto the Chhatra Shibir.
“In a press conference, Chhatra Dal President Rakibul Islam Rakib instructed the blaming of Shibir, revealing their vile intentions to the nation," he concluded.
