As many as 471 candidates will contest for 28 posts in the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) election slated for Sept 9.

Of them, 45 candidates will run for the vice president (VP) position, 19 for general secretary (GS), and 25 for assistant general secretary (AGS).

Chief Returning Officer Prof Mohammad Jasim Uddin confirmed the development at Dhaka University's Senate building on Tuesday.

Among other candidates:

• 17 will vie for Liberation War and democratic movement secretary posts

• 12 for science and technology secretary

• 11 each for common room, reading room, and cafeteria secretary and for human rights and law secretary

• 14 for international affairs secretary, 19 for literature and cultural secretary, nine for research and publication secretary

• 13 for sports secretary

• 12 for student transport secretary

• 17 for social service secretary

• 15 each for career development secretary and health and environment secretary

• 217 for the 13 member posts

Previously, on Aug 19, the last day for submitting nomination papers, around 509 candidates submitted their nominations for the DUCSU election. Among them, 38 candidacies were revoked.

This year, students will vote at eight polling centres for the DUCSU vote. Meanwhile, different panels have complained that the number of polling centres is insufficient.

From the final candidate list, it appears that 62 female candidates will contest several DUCSU posts. Among them, five will run for the VP post, one for GS and four for AGS, among others.

No female candidates, however, will run for the international affairs secretary and student transport secretary posts.
