Fu-Wang Bowling and Services has protested a bdnews24.com report involving Sheikh Nur Islam and his family.

In a letter sent on Saturday, Fu-Wang said the report, headlined “Four warehouses of Salman Muqtadir’s father-in-law sealed over duty-free alcohol”, contained “false, baseless, fabricated and misleading” information involving Nur Islam and his family.

The letter, signed by Fu-Wang Bowling’s Head of Operations Mohammad Faizul Karim, said: “Sheikh Nur Islam has been living in Canada for the past 46 years and he is a legal citizen of Canada.

“His two daughters, Disha Islam and Barsha Islam, are Canadian citizens by birth.”

Fu-Wang said, “He has his own legitimate business in Canada and is systematically bringing remittances to Bangladesh from his legitimate business income there. He is operating and expanding his remittance-based business in this country.”

The letter also claimed, “Sheikh Nur Islam has not taken any kind of loan or credit from any bank or financial institution in Bangladesh.

“Any allegation of money laundering against him is completely irrelevant, baseless, unreasonable and motivated.”

On Nur Islam’s businesses and warehouses in Bangladesh, Fu-Wang said: “Apart from Fu-Wang Bowling and Services Limited, Sheikh Nur Islam has no other liquor bar, warehouse or diplomatic bonded house in Bangladesh.

“Apart from this, he only has legitimate restaurant and agro businesses in Bangladesh.”

Addressing the raid and sealing of a bonded warehouse named Toss Bond Private Limited, Fu-Wang said the facility did not belong to Nur Islam.

It said, “The way the recent sealing of a warehouse called ‘Toss Bond’ has been presented as involving Sheikh Nur Islam’s organisation is completely false and fabricated.

“Sheikh Nur Islam or his family has no direct, indirect or even remote relationship with the said organisation.”

Fu-Wang also said, “Sheikh Nur Islam and his family did not accept the marriage of Sheikh Nur Islam’s daughter Disha Islam to content creator Salman Muqtadir.”

It added, “Since the said marriage, Sheikh Nur Islam and his family have completely severed all social and family relations with those concerned.”

Reporter’s Response

The report was prepared based on information from the National Board of Revenue’s Central Intelligence Cell (CIC) and Income Tax Intelligence and Investigation Unit.

Although the Fu-Wang letter refers to allegations of money laundering, bdnews24.com’s report did not use the term or provide any such information. Nor did the report contain any information that Nur Islam had taken loans from banks or financial institutions.

The report mentioned Nur Islam’s Canadian citizenship and information that he has at least four companies, citing intelligence agencies. bdnews24.com also has documents relating to this information.

The report also noted that their foreign citizenship was not reflected in the tax records.

It further reported that Nur Islam had brought nearly Tk 950 million in remittances into Bangladesh.

Under the Income Tax Act, Bangladeshi taxpayers are required to disclose details of their movable and immovable assets abroad in their tax returns. Even if a person’s total assets in Bangladesh are relatively small, any assets held abroad must be included in the return.

If a person conceals foreign assets in a tax return, the law provides for a fine equivalent to the fair market value of the property. To recover outstanding fines, tax authorities can attach, confiscate or sell the person’s assets in Bangladesh or abroad.

The NBR’s intelligence agencies and the Directorate of Narcotics Control (DNC), citing intelligence received from Canada, have identified Toss Bond as a diplomatic warehouse owned by Nur Islam. This was not information fabricated by the reporter.

A joint operation was conducted at the establishment from Thursday night. Four warehouses were sealed after duty-free liquor imported under bond facilities was found stored in two “unauthorised” warehouses.

After the operation raised questions about ownership, DNC Director General Md Hasan Maruf told Prothom Alo on Friday that the warehouse belonged to Nur Islam. He said the operation had been conducted as part of an anti-narcotics drive.

The report did not discuss the nature of Disha Islam’s relationship with her family. It only stated that content creator Salman Muqtadir had married Sheikh Nur Islam’s daughter, Disha.
