Comilla, July 25 (bdnews24.com) — A youth has been killed for reportedly protesting his wife's sexual harassment.
Nurul Islam Apple, 22, was knifed in front of the Comilla Government College on Monday, his friend and witness Saiful Islam told bdnews24.com.
Some youths had long been harassing his wife Ayesha Akhter, a grade-11 student of the college, Saiful said.
"When Ayesha informed Apple about the matter in the noon, he went to the college with me at once. There we had an altercation with the stalkers," he said.
One of the stalkers, Bipu, knifed Apple at one point, he added.
The attackers fled the scene after the incident, he said.
Apple died on way to the Comilla Sadar Hospital, he added.
Saiful said both Bipu and Apple were activists of the pro-government student organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League.
Officer-in-charge of Comilla Kotwali Model Police Station Mohiuddin Mahmud said, "We're looking into the matter."
"The process to file a case is underway," he said in the afternoon.
Inspector Shahjahan Kabir said it was proved in the preliminary investigation that Apple was murdered for protesting sexual harassment of his wife.
He said involvement of four people, including Bipu, in the incident was also proved in the preliminary investigation.
The other three are 'Sumon', 'Russel' and 'Opu', he said.
"We've interrogated Apple's friends Sajib and Helal," the inspector added.
Masudur Rahman, a Chhatra League leader and a relative of the deceased, told bdnews24.com that Apple, son of late Tajul Islam from Chhotra area in the town, stopped his study after Secondary School Certificate examination.
Apple, a part-time worker of a readymade garments shop in the town, married Ayesha three months ago, Masudur said.
Ayesha, daughter of an ambulance driver of Jhautala Medi Hospital, had been living with her parents as the two families did not accept the marriage, he said.
"Apple only accompanied me to the programmes of Awami League and Chhatra League," added Masudur, a follower of former VP of Comilla Victoria College Nur-ur-Rahman Tanim.
