Dhaka, Dec 8 (bdnews24.com) — The function to honour the recipients of Begum Roquiah Padak 2011, scheduled for Friday, has been put off.
The revised schedule will be made known later, the women and children affairs ministry said on Thursday and expressed regrets.
The government on Dec 5 finalised the names of provincial council member late advocate Meherunnesa Khatun and educationalist Hamida Khanam for the award in recognition of their contributions in women empowerment and development, women education, cultural and social activities.
President Zillur Rahman was scheduled to honour these two eminent women and hand over the crests, along with Tk 100,000 each, at the Osmani Auditorium, on the occasion of Roquiah Day 2011.
Dec 9 is observed as the death anniversary of Begum Roquiah Sakhawat Hosain in Bangladesh, a pioneer Muslim feminist in Bengal.
The government awards Roquiah Padak every year to women who have struggled hard to contribute to the betterment of women's lot.
Prof Meher Kabir and Ayesha Zafar won the medal last year.
