A Dhaka court has once again rejected constroversial lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam’s bail application in a case over the alleged abetment of his second wife Mariam Khatun’s suicide.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order after a hearing on Wednesday, according to Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam of the Prosecution Department.

Lawyers Mizanur Rahman and Mahabubur Rahman moved the bail application on Nazrul’s behalf.

Obaidur Rahman, Mariam’s uncle and another accused in the case, also sought bail, but his lawyer did not attend the hearing.

Prosecutor Harun Or Rashid opposed Nazrul’s bail application.

After the hearing, the court rejected the application.

Mariam’s father, SM Masum Billah, was present in court during the hearing.

On the evening of Sept 20, police recovered Mariam’s hanging body from a flat in the NAM building opposite parliament. Later that night, police took Nazrul and his first wife, Maksuda Islam, into custody.

Mariam’s father filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station that night on charges of abetment of suicide. Nazrul, Maksuda and Obaidur were named as accused.

The following day, acting on an application by Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Shamsuzzoha Sarkar, the court granted police four days to question Nazrul in their custody and one day to question Maksuda.

The investigation was transferred to the Detective Branch later that night.

Maksuda was sent to jail after her remand ended. Nazrul was sent to jail on Sept 28 after two rounds of remand lasting four days each.

On Sept 30, Nazrul and Maksuda applied for bail in the court of Additional Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah through their lawyer Mahabubur Rahman.

Mahabubur told the court that the accused had reached a settlement with Mariam’s father and that the complainant had no objection to the two being granted bail.

The court subsequently granted Maksuda bail but rejected Nazrul’s application.

Obaidur was sent to jail on Sept 23 following his arrest. Police applied on Sept 28 to take him into custody for questioning.

On Oct 1, the court granted police five days to question Obaidur in their custody. He was sent back to jail on Monday after the remand ended.

His lawyer, Golam Saber Chowdhury, sought bail that day. The court initially set the hearing for Tuesday before postponing it to Wednesday. However, Obaidur’s lawyer did not appear in court on Wednesday.
