Controversial Member of Parliament Gazi Nazrul Islam has reached a settlement with the family of his second wife Mariam Khatun in a case over abetting her suicide, his lawyer has said.
Raising this issue in court on Wednesday, lawyer Mahbubur Rahman also said that MP Nazrul and his first wife Maksuda Islam will seek bail.
The bail hearing was held in the court of Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah.
Defence lawyer Mahbubur told reporters, "We sought bail on the condition of Nazrul and Maksuda Islam's settlement. They are not involved in the incident.
"A settlement has already been reached with the plaintiff. The plaintiff, who was present at the hearing, said that he has no objection to granting bail to the two suspects."
Meanwhile, the judge granted bail to Maksuda after the hearing. However, the state's lawyer Omar Faruq Faruqi said that Gazi Nazrul's bail application was rejected.
Police recovered Mariam’s hanging body from a flat at NAM Bhaban near the parliament complex on Sept 20.
Later that night, Mariam’s father SM Masum Billah filed the case against Nazrul, Maksuda and the victim’s maternal uncle, Obaidur Rahman, accusing them of abetting her suicide.
The following day, the court granted Nazrul four days and Maksuda one day in remand on a petition by Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police SI Md Shamsuzzoha Sarkar.
The case was handed over to the Detective Branch that night.
In the complaint, Masum alleged that Mariam married Nazrul in June under the “direct instigation” of her maternal uncle Obaidur.
Mariam lived with Nazrul and Maksuda at Flat 203 of NAM Bhaban 5.
According to the complaint, Mariam had told her family that Nazrul and Maksuda had subjected her to physical and mental abuse over different matters since the marriage.
The statement said that Mariam had told her family that Nazrul and Maksuda had physically and mentally tortured her since their marriage. Meanwhile, on Sunday afternoon, around 5:30pm, Nazrul asked the plaintiff to go rush to his home over the phone. When he arrived, Masum found Mariam hanged.
The next day, based on a petition by Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Shamsuzzoha Sarkar, the court granted a four-day remand to interrogate Nazrul and a one-day remand to question Maksuda in custody.
On Sept 24, the court remanded Nazrul for four more days. On Sept 28, Nazrul was sent to jail after his remand ended.
Mariam's maternal uncle Obaidur has also been arrested.
