MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife, Maksuda Khanam, have been brought to court as police seek seven days to question them in a case over the alleged abetment of his second wife Mariam Khatun’s suicide.
Police from Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station brought the two to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court at 2:22pm on Monday.
They were subsequently taken to the court lock-up.
“They have brought MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife Maksuda Khanam to court. They are being held in the lock-up,” said Sub-Inspector Morshed Alam, who is in charge of the facility.
The case's investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Shamsuzzoha Sarker of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, has sought a seven-day remand for the two for questioning.
Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam of the prosecution division said the application was expected to be heard by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam.
“They will be produced before the magistrate during the hearing,” he told bdnews24.com.
Ibne Mizan, deputy commissioner of police for the Tejgaon Division, said the speaker of the parliament had been informed of Nazrul’s arrest.
Case Against Nazrul
Police recovered the body of 19-year-old Mariam from a flat at NAM Bhaban opposite the parliament complex on Sunday evening.
Her father, SM Masum Billah, subsequently filed a case accusing Nazrul, Maksuda and Mariam’s maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman of abetting suicide.
According to the case statement, Mariam married Nazrul in June at the “direct instigation” of Obaidur and had been living with Nazrul and Maksuda at the NAM Bhaban flat.
Masum alleged that Mariam had told her family she was subjected to physical and mental abuse by Nazrul and Maksuda after the marriage.
He said Nazrul called him around 5:30pm on Sunday and asked him to come to the flat quickly.
When he arrived, Masum said, he found his daughter hanging.
Masum said in the case statement that he found several handwritten notes on Mariam’s bed as her body was being recovered.
One note read: “I bow down to you again and again only because I have grown attached to you. Otherwise, I am not as cheap as you think I am.”
Another read: “I entered the battle with him with complete faith. I could not win. I was defeated on the battlefield. How could I have won when, at the very end of the battle, I discovered that you were the commander of the opposing army?”
“I lost and you won, because it was only by betraying the trust I placed in you that you were able to defeat me. Even as I stood on the brink of destruction, I kept a smile on my face. Consider that very smile the reason for your destruction.”
Another note contained two passages.
One read: “He was another woman’s husband. On paper, his wife had the rights over him. And I was the fool. I had made someone else’s husband the man I desired for myself."
A separate passage read: “Losing someone is more honourable than having only half of them. Because love is never something to be shared. Love is either whole, or it remains incomplete.”
Nazrul and Mariam’s relationship became public in July after a video showing them together at a hotel in Dhaka’s Moghbazar spread on social media.
Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and activists initially claimed the footage had been generated using AI.
Nazrul later acknowledged Mariam as his second wife in a Facebook post.
Jamaat expelled Nazrul on Jul 22, saying an internal investigation had established “moral misconduct” on his part. The party later informed the speaker and the Election Commission of the decision.
