The suicide abetment case filed over the death of Mariam Khatun, the second wife of Satkhira MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, has been transferred to the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police for investigation.
Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner Ibne Mizan said on Tuesday that the case had been handed over to the DB on Monday night.
Detectives will now question suspects Nazrul and his first wife Maksuda Islam under remand in police custody.
Police recovered Mariam’s hanging body from a flat at NAM Bhaban near parliament on Sunday evening. Later that night, law enforcers took Nazrul and Maksuda into custody.
Mariam’s father SM Masum Billah subsequently filed a case accusing Nazrul, Maksuda and her maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman of abetting her suicide.
According to a first information report, 19-year-old Mariam was subjected to physical and mental abuse after marrying Nazrul in June and living with him and Maksuda.
The case comes amid controversy surrounding Nazrul’s relationship with Mariam.
The FIR says a video showing the pair in an intimate moment at a hotel in Moghbazar spread on Facebook on Jul 20.
Jamaat-e-Islami initially described the footage as AI-generated. Nazrul later identified Mariam as his second wife.
The party subsequently decided to expel him on Jul 22 over allegations of moral misconduct. The opposition later informed the speaker of the House and the Election Commission of the decision.
