Jamaat-e-Islami MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife Maksuda Islam have faced a remand hearing over allegations that they abetted the suicide of his second wife, Mariam Khatun.
Political remarks from the state counsel prompted the judge to intervene and tell him to stick to the case.
The hearing took place at Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam’s court.
Police recovered Mariam’s hanging body from a flat in the NAM Bhaban near parliament on Sunday evening. That night, police took Nazrul and Maksuda into custody.
Mariam’s father SM Masum Billah then filed a case against Nazrul, Maksuda and her maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman.
The two suspects were produced in court at 2:22pm. Investigating officer SI Md Shamsuzzoha Sarkar sought seven days’ custody for questioning, citing five reasons.
They were brought to the fifth-floor courtroom around 3:12pm in handcuffs, helmets and bulletproof vests, which were removed at the dock.
Defence lawyer Mahbubur Rahman sought bail, saying: “One of the two suspects is a sitting MP, and the other is a Jamaat worker.”
He said Nazrul was a four-time MP and an elderly man, adding: “We also want justice for the death.”
Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi alleged Nazrul married Mariam after persuading Obaidur and his first wife.
He said videos showed the couple visiting hotels and motels and said, “We cannot rule out murder.”
When Faruqi said, “We have heard that Jamaat people are honest,” the judge stopped him: “Stay with the incident in this case. Don’t go into politics.”
The court granted four days’ remand for Nazrul and one day for Maksuda.
The FIR alleges Mariam, 19, faced physical and mental abuse after marrying Nazrul in June and living with him and Maksuda.
It says a video of Nazrul and Mariam in an intimate moment at a Moghbazar hotel spread on Facebook on Jul 20.
Jamaat initially called it AI-generated, but Nazrul later identified Mariam as his second wife.
Jamaat decided to expel him on Jul 22 over alleged moral misconduct; the opposition later notified the speaker and Election Commission.
