Police have arrested Maksuda Khanam, the first wife of Member of Parliament Gazi Nazrul Islam, in a case filed on charges of abetting the suicide of his second wife.
She was taken to the police station on Sunday night and was subsequently shown arrested in the case.
Earlier, police recovered the hanging body of his second wife Mariam Khatun from a flat at the NAM Bhaban.
Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner Ibn-e-Mizan said, “She has been shown arrested in a case filed by the maternal uncle of Gazi Nazrul’s second wife.”
The Additional Deputy Commissioner said, “Some notes written by Mariam were recovered from the room where she used to stay.”
In response to a question, he said: “The MP’s second wife did not have a phone. She was not allowed to use a phone.”
Tejgaon Division Additional Commissioner Fazlul Karim, meanwhile, said: “[Nazrul Islam] is also named as an accused in the case. As he is a member of parliament, there are certain rules and procedures regarding his arrest. He will be shown arrested after following those rules and procedures.”
He said the lawmaker is now in police custody.
Maksuda Khanam, the arrestee, is the paternal grandaunt of the deceased Mariam. Mariam’s paternal grandmother Masuma and Maksuda are sisters.
Mariam’s death comes two months after a video showing Nazrul with 19-year-old Mariam went viral on social media in July, triggering widespread discussion.
Nazrul had then acknowledged Mariam as his second wife but faced nationwide criticism and intense political pressure. Jamaat subsequently expelled him from the party.
