Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch has sought another seven days to question MP Gazi Nazrul Islam in custody over the alleged abetment of his second wife Mariam Khatun’s suicide.
The fresh remand request came on Thursday after the Satkhira-4 lawmaker completed four days of questioning in the case.
Investigating officer Mohammad Salauddin produced Nazrul before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court and applied for another seven days of remand.
The application is due to be heard by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ripon Hossain, according to prosecution Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam.
Nazrul has been kept in the court lock-up pending the hearing, said SI Morshed Alam, who is in charge of the facility.
Mariam’s Death
Police recovered the hanging body of 19-year-old Mariam from a flat at NAM Bhaban opposite the parliament complex on Sept 20.
Nazrul and his first wife, Maksuda Begum, were taken into custody later that night.
Mariam’s father, SM Masum Billah, subsequently filed a case accusing Nazrul, Maksuda and Mariam’s maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman of abetting her suicide.
The following day, a court granted police four days to question Nazrul and one day to question Maksuda in custody.
The investigation was transferred to the Detective Branch later that night.
According to the case statement, Mariam married Nazrul in June at the “direct instigation” of her maternal uncle Obaidur.
The case alleges that after the marriage, Mariam told her family that Nazrul and Maksuda had subjected her to physical and mental abuse over various issues.
