ASM Maksud Kamal, a professor specialising in disaster science and climate resilience, has been named the new vice chancellor of Dhaka University.
His appointment was announced by the Ministry of Education on Sunday.
Kamal will succeed Prof Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman, who has served a two-year term as vice chancellor and will return to teaching at the Department of Islamic History and Culture.
His appointment was made directly by the president, departing from the traditional panel election method used for such decisions.
Kamal is set to assume his new role on Nov 4.
Kamal's academic journey has taken him from Bangladesh to institutions such as the Tokyo Institute of Technology in Japan and the University of Twente in the Netherlands for higher studies.
