Three people, including an 8-year-old boy, have been injured after a lift plunged when its cables apparently snapped at a government housing complex in Dhaka's Mirpur.

The incident occurred at Building No. 1 of the Paikpara housing complex for public servants around 6am on Friday.

The injured were identified as Mostafizur Rahman, 62, Nais Ahmed, 40, and his 8-year-old son Md Wasi.

Doctors said Nais suffered fractures to both legs.

They were taken to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) in Agargaon.

Residents alleged that the lift had been faulty for a long time and had repeatedly been put back into service after minor repairs.

A post on a Facebook page associated with the housing complex said the lift on the left side of Building No. 1 had plunged, possibly from the second or fourth floor.

All three injured people live on the fifth floor, according to the post.

Sajal, a resident of the complex, said the three were getting into the lift after Fajr prayers when the incident occurred.

“A short while later, the lift fell with a loud crash. The security guard heard the noise and went there, where he heard people screaming from inside the lift. Several people from nearby then came and rescued them before taking them to hospital,” he said.

Another resident, Samir Chandra Shil, said the authorities had been contacted several times about problems with the lift but had “paid no attention”.

Residents said the complex has eight buildings and alleged that lifts in most of them are in poor condition.

Mirpur Model Police Station and the Fire Service said they had not been informed of the incident.

Sub-Inspector Md Zakir of Mirpur Model Police Station said residents had not reported the incident to police.
